Job Interview Preparation: A Practical Guide

Good interview preparation is structured practice, not memorising perfect sentences. Prepare evidence, understand the role and practise communicating clearly.

1. Understand what the role requires

Read the job description again and identify its main responsibilities, required skills and working conditions. Research the organisation through reliable public sources so you can explain why the role interests you and what it involves.

2. Prepare examples that prove your skills

Prepare five to seven examples from work, study, internships, projects or other genuine experience. For behavioural questions, use STAR—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to keep your answer focused.

  • Describe the situation briefly.
  • Explain your own responsibility and actions.
  • Share the result, learning or improvement.

Freshers can use projects, coursework and volunteering; be clear about what you personally contributed.

3. Practise the answers you are likely to need

Practise a short introduction, why you want the role, relevant strengths, a challenge you handled and a skill you are developing. For technical interviews, revise the skills named in the vacancy and practise explaining your reasoning—not just the final answer.

Use common interview questions as a practice list.

4. Prepare questions for the interviewer

Ask about priorities for the first few months, team structure, training, success measures and the next stage of the process. Questions should help you understand the work and decide whether the role suits you.

5. Check the practical details

For an online interview, test the camera, microphone, connection and meeting link. For an in-person meeting, confirm the address, travel time and documents requested. Keep a copy of your resume and the vacancy details available.

6. During and after the interview

Listen to the whole question, answer directly and use specific evidence. It is acceptable to ask for clarification or explain how you would approach something you have not done before. Do not invent experience.

After the conversation, note what went well and what you would improve. Follow the employer's stated process and avoid repeated messages.

Interview safety.

Verify unusual requests independently. Never share OTPs, passwords, UPI PINs or CVV details to secure an interview or job.
